Ludus Latrunculorum Board Game (NEW OPTIONS AVAILABLE!)

We are now offering multiple versions of this game, and all pieces are decorated!

Ludus latrunculorum, (also known as latrunculi, or latrones) was “the game of the brigands” played throughout the Roman Empire. A two player predecessor of Chess and a cousin of Hnefatafl, the objectives of the game are to either capture all your opponent's regular pieces, or to capture your opponent's Dux, or king.
Our standard version comes with an 8 by 11 square setup, with 12 pieces per side: 11 regular pieces, and the Dux. We are now offering 8 by 8 and 8 by 12 versions, witha total of 25 pieces per side.
Gameplay is simple to learn, with captures being made with a flanking sort of action like in Hnefatafl. Pieces move straight any number of spaces in the rows or columns to their positions. A full list of rules is included as well as a cloth bag to store pieces in. Get it for the historian or game lover in you life today!

We are now offering multiple versions of this game, and all pieces are marked to work with Dr. Shädler's reconstruction as well!

Has anyone ever hurt themselves with your wood swords or wands?

We have had no reported major injuries with our wooden weapons or wands, and we take extra precautions to insure that our products are designed in such a way to prevent injury. Bruising has occurred when products were used improperly, but larger injuries are possible since the wood swords and wands can be easily misused. Adult supervision is highly recommended at all times as well as supervision with a martial artist when items are used for contact sport or play. But if used properly, our products are very safe, and very fun. :)

Is The Wood Listed Really the Wood Used?

Yes, to the very best of our knowledge. We use 100% wood of different kinds for our wands. For example, if we say the wand is an Oak wand, it is made from Oak wood. Our wooden swords are made from pine unless otherwise specified.

This is a very nice board with clean, thin, etched lines and playing pieces with distinctive etched designs. I purchased the 8x12 board, which is 10"X10", with 3/4" squares. Although a little smaller than I had anticipated, the board and pieces are certainly usable, and the set is easily portable.

Great quality board and pieces-- I bought it as a gift and it was perfect!
